The past season has brought some big changes. Before the start of the season it looked as if Tiger Woods simply passed its reign to the new king, Rory McIlroy, however, during the year a powerful trio was “suddenly” formed or even quartet if we add Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and Rickie Fowler. It seems that these great golfers will compete with each other during the “regular” and Grand Slam competitions in the next few years similarly as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player in the past.

David Carter speaks highly about the successes of mainly Jordan Spieth and Jason Day. “They both had a phenomenal season, played amazingly,” smiles the English professional.

It was only Jordan Spieth’s third season on the PGA Tour when he managed to shake up the golf world the way he did. “It’s difficult to say if he can do something like that again in future years. He cannot count on repeating this great year’s success; he has to start from scratch again next year and work hard,” says David Carter.

Complex and consistent Spieth

Spieth appeals to David Carter as he is a complex player. “He has everything a good player should have. He can chip, putt, he knows how to work with the ball. He is consistent in all aspects of the game and gives stable performances. Spieth is mentally balanced and surrounded by good people and family who supports him. These are his huge advantages,” he says.

Just after such a great season, it is important for him to remain grounded according to David Carter. “Of course it’s not easy. Plenty of people might suddenly appear trying to exploit him. He must be able to say no to them because if he succumbs to this temptation, it might affect his game in the future. And this would be a high price to pay. He must be careful. But it seems that the people around him will not let him have his head in the clouds,” he adds.

David Carter says that Spieth should just focus on the game now. Dealing with the fact of being a successful golf player can be hard. “When Martin Kaymer became the world number one golf player, he admitted that the whole situation had been hard and fast. He had difficulties handling this which affected his later games. Fortunately, now he knows what it takes to be a top leader in golf and is more prepared than ever,” says the English pro.

Someone works even harder

David Carter experienced a few great years on the European Tour in four consecutive seasons (from 1996 to 1999) and his lowest score ever was the 33^rd place overall in the European series. In five other seasons, he found himself among the one hundred best players in Europe. “Good years are always difficult to repeat. Now imagine how hard it must be when you are right at the top.”

David Carter recalls when Adam Scott was shocked and impressed by Tiger Woods’s hard work while they were training together some time ago. “Scott is certainly no slacker, but Tiger worked even harder. When a person has bigger aspirations and dreams, he must make them come true by simply putting more effort into his work,” concludes David Carter.
